A Natural Harbour

The Grand Harbour, known in Maltese as il-Port il-Kbir, is a naturally deep-water inlet stretching approximately 3.6 km. It extends from the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula—on which Valletta and Floriana are built—into the inner harbour as far as Marsa, and is bounded at its entrance by Ricasoli Point.

The harbour faces north-east, while its south-eastern shoreline is characterised by a series of inlets and headlands, including Rinella Creek, Kalkara Creek, Dockyard Creek, and French Creek. These are separated by Kalkara and the historic Three Cities: Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea.

A two-arm breakwater system helps protect the harbour, allowing for year-round use, except during strong easterly winds. Its natural depth—unusual for such inlets—enables large vessels, including cruise liners, to enter and dock with ease.
