Loggerhead turtle

Loggerhead turtle

Scientific name: Caretta caretta

Suborder: Cryptodira

Genus: Caretta

Family: Cheloniidae

Habitat: Coastal zones, open sea

Average weight: 180 kg

Max length: 1.07 m

The Loggerhead turtle is the most frequently encountered sea turtle in the Mediterranean. It is easily recognised by its reddish-brown, heart-shaped shell and pale-yellow underside. Its name comes from its notably large head and powerful jaws, perfectly adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey such as crabs and conchs. Loggerheads are also known to feed on jellyfish.

Found in temperate to tropical oceans worldwide, Loggerhead turtles are exceptional long-distance migrants, particularly during the nesting season. Producing eggs requires enormous energy, so females typically reproduce every two to three years. During a single nesting season—usually between May and August—a female may lay up to five clutches of eggs at intervals of around two weeks. Each clutch can contain as many as 115 eggs.

Loggerhead turtles reach sexual maturity at approximately 35 years of age and can live for up to 80 years. From the moment they hatch and scramble towards the sea, they lead largely solitary lives, spending decades navigating and foraging across the open oceans alone.

Unfortunately, many loggerhead turtles around the Maltese Islands are often found entangled in abandoned fishing gear or Fishing Aggregate Devices (FADs), usually with an ingested hook. Nature Trust Malta is entrusted with retrieving these injured animals and caring for them in their rehabilitation centre until they can be released back into the sea. You may visit the centre to learn more about these beautiful animals.

Threats

Light pollution

What can we do?

During nesting season avoid using yellow or white light - when necessary use red light- on sandy beaches and try to reduce noise.

Threats

Entanglement in fishing gear

What can we do?

Encourage governments to work with fisherman to develop hooks and lines which reduce the impact on turtles.

Threats

Boat strikes

What can we do?

Reduce boat speed especially during nesting season and in areas known for turtles nesting.
