Keep in mind
Keep your belongings secure and carry a small first aid kit. Always bring enough drinking water and be mindful of the sun, especially during summer, as there is little to no shade along the walks.
Check the weather before starting your walk. Choose a walk that suits your ability and stop if it becomes too challenging.
Route description
The walk starts in the village of Baħrija and follows rural roads as it heads westwards through open countryside towards the coast. After leaving the village, the route gradually descends through garigue terrain, with wide views opening up across the surrounding cliffs and farmland. The path continues downhill towards Fomm ir-Riħ, passing rocky slopes and natural features before reaching the dramatic inlet and pebble beach below the cliffs. From Fomm ir-Riħ, the route turns north and follows coastal paths and ledges along the base of the cliffs, with sections close to the sea and constant views of the rugged shoreline. The walk then begins a gradual ascent away from the coast, following paths that lead inland towards Ġnejna. The final section climbs gently through rural tracks before reaching the finishing point near Ġnejna Bay. The total distance of the walk is approximately four kilometres.
Practical advice
This route includes steep descents and ascents, uneven rocky ground and exposed coastal sections that require good fitness and careful footing. The descent to and ascent from Fomm ir-Riħ can be strenuous, especially in hot weather. The area is largely unshaded, so sufficient drinking water and sun protection are essential. Some coastal sections may be slippery, particularly after rain or when sea spray is present. Walkers should remain on established paths, avoid unstable cliff edges and take extra care near the sea. Due to the challenging terrain and exposure, this route is best suited to experienced walkers and should not be attempted in poor weather or strong winds.
