Keep in mind
Keep your belongings secure and carry a small first aid kit. Always bring enough drinking water and be mindful of the sun, especially during summer, as there is little to no shade along the walks.
Check the weather before starting your walk. Choose a walk that suits your ability and stop if it becomes too challenging.
Route description
The walk starts at Golden Bay, initially following paths near the beach before heading north-west into the Majjistral Nature Park. After leaving the busy bay area, the route climbs gently through open garigue and rural terrain, with wide views opening up across the coastline. The walk continues along coastal paths and cliff-top trails, passing natural viewpoints, rocky headlands and exposed sections overlooking the sea. As the route progresses, it loops inland through quieter countryside, following a network of paths and tracks that pass historical features such as old shelters, aqueduct remains and military structures. The route then returns towards the coast, rejoining scenic cliff-edge paths before descending back towards Golden Bay, where the walk finishes near the beach. The total distance of the walk is approximately seven kilometres.
Practical advice
This route includes steep descents and ascents, uneven rocky ground and exposed coastal sections that require good fitness and careful footing. The descent to and ascent from Fomm ir-Riħ can be strenuous, especially in hot weather. The area is largely unshaded, so sufficient drinking water and sun protection are essential. Some coastal sections may be slippery, particularly after rain or when sea spray is present. Walkers should remain on established paths, avoid unstable cliff edges and take extra care near the sea. Due to the challenging terrain and exposure, this route is best suited to experienced walkers and should not be attempted in poor weather or strong winds.
