Route description

The route offers a series of scenic long-distance walking trails, with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside. The path can be explored in sections, as completing it in its entirety at one go can be quite demanding.

The trail ranges from moderately easy in some sections to highly challenging in others. This variation makes certain stretches accessible to walkers of most fitness levels, while others are better suited to the more determined and physically prepared. The Victoria Lines extend from Madliena in the east to Fomm ir-Riħ in Binġemma to the west, and the route can be started from either end or joined at various points along its length. Proper footwear is essential, as is carrying sufficient drinking water, and it is best to avoid attempting the hike during the hot summer months.

Traversing the full length of the Victoria Lines can take a few days if completed in stages. If undertaken in one go, it could be completed in 5 hours. If you choose to end at Fomm ir-Riħ on the west coast, you are rewarded with dramatic coastal scenery, featuring sheer cliffs and striking layers of exposed geology. At this point, little remains of the original fortifications; a reservoir now marks the site where part of the wall once stood. With a bit of luck and patience, you may spot rare seabirds gliding overhead, particularly in the early morning or at dusk. This side of the island also offers an ideal setting to enjoy a truly memorable sunset.

Practical advice

This route includes long stretches of uneven paths and sections close to exposed cliff edges, requiring careful footing throughout. Much of the walk is unshaded and exposed to sun and wind, so walkers should carry sufficient drinking water and use appropriate sun protection. Some sections can be slippery, particularly after rain or during windy conditions. Walkers should stay on established paths, avoid unstable cliff edges and respect restricted or private areas. Due to the length and exposed terrain, this walk is best suited for confident and reasonably fit walkers and should not be attempted in poor weather or strong winds.
