The Nurdle Challenge
Are you passionate about the environment and willing to do your part to help minimise nurdle pollution? Organise a group of friends, family, neighbours or complete strangers and take part in this simple yet effective challenge. You can also do this alone! Register on the Bluetide platform and collect a jar of nurdles from any sandy beach in Malta. You may use a sieve to sift through the sand, or simply use your hands to slowly uncover layers of sand and collect nurdles. Make sure to take photos of your nurdle hunt!

What are nurdles?
Nurdles are small plastic pellets, about the size of a lentil, that serve as the raw material for manufacturing most plastic products. They are transported around the world before being melted and moulded into everyday items. When spilled during production or transport, nurdles can end up in rivers and oceans, where they persist for decades, are easily mistaken for food by wildlife, and can absorb harmful pollutants, making them a significant source of marine plastic pollution.
The Great Global Nurdle Hunt
Between the 4th of September and the 4th of October, join the global movement to save our seas from plastic pollution. The steps are simple –
- Organise a group or go at it alone
- Track your location, date and time, duration of hunt, number of nurdles collected
- Take a photo of the hunt and the final collection
