Short-beaked common dolphins are medium-sized cetaceans with a rounded forehead (melon) and a moderately long beak (rostrum). Their sleek bodies are easily recognisable by a distinctive colour pattern that forms an hourglass shape along the sides, beneath the triangular dorsal fin. A dark grey cape runs along the back from the head to just below the dorsal fin, forming a ‘V’ on each side of the body and creating the characteristic hourglass pattern.
Just behind the head and extending toward the dorsal fin is a yellow-tan patch that contrasts with the darker grey cape along the back. Posterior to the dorsal fin, towards the tail, the body becomes a lighter grey. A dark stripe extends from the lower jaw to the flipper, contributing to the species’ complex and striking facial pattern.
Young and juvenile short-beaked common dolphins typically display paler and less distinct markings than adults. In addition, colour patterns may vary between populations found in different geographical regions.
This species is highly sociable and energetic and usually seen in large pods averaging hundreds of individuals. They are often active at the surface of the water and love to leap and high speed out of the water, flipping or somersaulting, or swimming along side ships.
Short-beaked common dolphins are closely related to long-beaked common dolphins and are often confused with them. However, the two species differ slightly in body size, external morphology, and habitat preferences.
These dolphins typically feed at night and rest during the day. They are capable of diving to depths of up to 300 m, although they usually feed on schools of fish and squid that undertake nightly vertical migrations toward the surface, often reaching depths of around 30 m.
The average lifespan of short-beaked common dolphins is approximately 40 years, and individuals typically reach sexual maturity between 8 and 10 years of age. Following a gestation period of 10 to 11 months, females usually give birth to a single calf every 2 to 3 years. Calves begin to wean after about one year, although they generally remain dependent on their mothers for an additional year.
Short-beaked common dolphins face many of the same threats as other dolphin species, including entanglement in fishing gear and accidental capture as bycatch. In some regions, they are also threatened by direct hunting, as individuals may be taken for their meat and oil.
