Route description

The walk starts near Mellieħa Bay, following the coastal road northwards with open views across the sandy beach and turquoise waters. After leaving the seafront, the route turns inland and climbs gradually towards the Red Tower area, passing rural roads and open countryside. From the Red Tower, the walk continues westwards through the Foresta 2000 nature reserve, where paths wind through regenerating woodland and offer occasional viewpoints over the surrounding landscape. The route then heads towards the coast again, passing the ruins of the former Festival Hotel and continuing along exposed cliff-top paths overlooking the sea. After reaching the Ras ir-Raħeb area, the walk turns inland once more, descending through rural terrain and minor roads before looping back towards Mellieħa and the finishing point. The total distance of the walk is approximately six kilometres.

Practical advice

This route combines paved roads, rural tracks and uneven coastal paths, with some sections close to exposed cliff edges. Walkers should take care on rocky ground and remain well back from unstable cliffs. Much of the route is exposed with limited shade, so sufficient water and sun protection are essential, especially in warmer months. After rain, some paths can become slippery or muddy. Walkers should respect protected areas within Foresta 2000, stay on marked paths and avoid entering unsafe structures such as the Festival Hotel ruins. Due to the length and mixed terrain, this walk is best suited to reasonably fit walkers and should be avoided in poor weather or strong winds.
