Route description

The walk starts near the Mellieħa area and heads west along minor roads and tracks towards the Rdum il-Qammieħ coastline. After leaving the built-up area, the route gradually reaches open countryside before descending towards the rugged coastal cliffs. From here, the walk follows the cliff edge westwards, passing dramatic rock formations, natural ledges and several panoramic viewpoints overlooking the open sea. The route continues along the exposed coastline of Rdum il-Qammieħ, where sections of rocky ground alternate with clearer coastal paths. Along the way, walkers pass areas of historical interest, including old defensive structures and rural features, before the route turns inland. The final stretch follows rural roads and paths back towards the starting area, completing a circular walk of approximately six kilometres.

Practical advice

This route includes uneven terrain, rocky coastal sections and long stretches close to high, exposed cliffs, requiring constant attention and secure footing. Large parts of the walk are fully exposed, with very limited shade, so walkers should carry sufficient drinking water and use sun protection year-round. Some sections may be slippery after rain and strong winds can make the cliff-edge paths uncomfortable or unsafe. Walkers should remain on established routes, avoid unstable cliff edges and respect any restricted or private land. Due to the length, exposure and terrain, this walk is best suited for experienced and confident walkers and should not be attempted in poor weather or high winds.
