Salina, situated between St Paul’s Bay and Naxxar, is a coastal area best known for its historic salt pans.
The surrounding salt pans and wetlands form a designated Nature Reserve. When visiting, be sure to bring binoculars to observe the variety of birdlife in the area, and consider stopping by BirdLife Malta’s visitor centre for more information.
Salt Harvesting
Each July, an annual Salt Festival is organised by BirdLife Malta, showcasing how salt was traditionally produced and harvested in these pans. The Salina Salt Museum also offers some insight into this historic process.
Kennedy Grove
The flat terrain extending towards Kennedy Grove makes this area ideal for easy walks, with lovely views across the bay and wetlands. It’s also a great spot for picnics or for children to run around and play safely. If you have a hammock, bring it along and enjoy a peaceful afternoon under the shade of the trees—pure bliss.
How to get there
By Car
Parking is limited to the spaces across the road from the Nature reserve or the parking area right before the reserve. A taxi is advisable during peak season.
By Public transport
Take a bus to Salina, Għasfur stop. The bus stops just before the Nature Reserve.
The Little Egret
The Little Egret is a familiar and elegant resident of Salina. At the reserve, you can often spot these graceful birds standing quietly at the water’s edge or wading through the shallow waters in search of food. To get a closer look, feel free to borrow a pair of binoculars from the BirdLife Malta Welcome Centre. Then, settle onto the terrace and enjoy hours of peaceful birdwatching in the reserve’s tranquil surroundings.
