Fomm ir-Riħ, located on Malta’s northwest coast, is a remote valley leading down to a pebble beach. The area is accessible by a steep path and is known for its dramatic cliffs and unspoiled sea views.
A Well Hidden Gem
Tucked away on the western side of the island, the little bay of Fomm ir-Riħ, offers a tranquil setting to unwind and watch the sun set over the horizon. The pebbled bay is not accessible on foot, it requires a boat to be enjoyed. Alternatively, you may enjoy a trail from the nearby village of Mġarr or Baħrija, soaking in the breath-taking views.

On-street parking is limited in the country roads. Consider parking in Mġarr and walking for an hour.
By Public transport
Take a bus to Mġarr. Then walk for about an hour to get to Fomm ir-Riħ.
The Smiling Whale
The slightly upturned jawline gives the Cuvier’s beaked whale its characteristic “smiling” appearance. The deep waters west of Malta are home to this remarkable cetacean, which is renowned for its extraordinary diving abilities. It can dive to depths of up to 3 kilometres and remain underwater for as long as 90 minutes while searching for food.
Cuvier’s beaked whales rarely breach or display other active behaviours at the surface, making them extremely difficult to spot. As they spend very little time above water, encounters are uncommon. Catching a glimpse of one of these gentle giants is therefore a truly remarkable experience.
